1 Peter 2:13-14

We are continuing to look at and consider the challenges that Peter presents to us to live good lives here on God’s Daytimer. With this in mind let’s look at today’s verse:

1 Peter 2:13-14 (NIV)
13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.

One of the things that Peter is telling us is that people are going to watch you to see how you as a believer respond to authority. I was feeling fairly good about this until I started thinking about situations in my own life where rather than submitting to certain aspects of local government that I have considered to be out of hand, I have often gone ahead and done what I wanted to do. I have always justified this by saying that the government’s intervention is all about money and therefore not important, but I am having to wrestle through my ideas on the subject. Perhaps there are some areas where you feel the same way. I don’t believe that the verse means we should ever do something the government tells us to do that goes directly against the Word of God, but choosing to ignore things because they are not convenient or because I consider them to be ridiculous is different. Great food for thought!

Be blessed and kept!
