Matthew 16:24-25

Welcome to Online Bible Studies

Today’s Bible verse is
Matthew 16:24-25 (NIV)
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.

Let’s read the verse in context:
Matthew 16:13-28 (NIV)
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” 14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ. 21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. 22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.” 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done. 28 I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Today’s Quiet Time with God

I had a friend email and ask me about today’s verse. How do we deny ourselves, take up our crosses and follow Him? Good question. If any of you thinks there is an easy answer then you need to dig a little deeper. To me it is a daily challenge to remember that life is not all about me. I am not the center of the universe and the people around me are not here just to make my life work. I have to live, day by day, and moment by moment, seeking after God. When I blow it, I ask for forgiveness and I start again. That is the best way I know how to answer that question. Keep your eyes on Jesus today, you will be blessed as you do!

Psalms 118:24

Welcome to Online Bible Studies

Today’s Bible verse is
Psalms 118:24 (NIV)
24 This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Let’s read the verse in context:
Psalms 118:19-29 (NIV)
19 Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter and give thanks to the LORD. 20 This is the gate of the LORD through which the righteous may enter. 21 I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation. 22 The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; 23 the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. 24 This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. 25 O LORD, save us; O LORD, grant us success. 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. From the house of the LORD we bless you. 27 The LORD is God, and he has made his light shine upon us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar. 28 You are my God, and I will give you thanks; you are my God, and I will exalt you. 29 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.

Today’s Quiet Time with God

I think today’s verse is a great way to start the week. It is a reminder that no matter what is happening in the world, we need to remember that “this is the day the Lord has made”! God is in control and we need to rejoice and be glad in it. We would do well to remember this verse everyday. Today is God’s day. He has a plan for you and He loves you. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, you will be blessed as you do!
