Philippians 3:14-19

Today’s Bible verse is
Ephesians 3:14-19 (NIV)
14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge–that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Let’s read the verse in context:
Ephesians 3:1-21 (NIV)
1 For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles–2 Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me for you, 3 that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. 4 In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets. 6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus. 7 I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power. 8 Although I am less than the least of all God’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. 10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11 according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. 13 I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory. 14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. Today’s Quiet Time with God
Today’s verse captures what I believe is one of the most powerful prayers in the Bible. The heart of the prayer is that we would know the amazing love of God. God’s unconditional love is hard for us to grasp, and yet in this prayer, Paul paints an amazing picture of what that love is like. Paul’s prayer is my prayer for you today. Put your name in the blanks and receive this prayer from me today:

Proverbs 18:24

Today’s Bible verse is
Proverbs 18:24 (NIV)
24 A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Let’s read the verse in context:
(Actually the proverbs are often written as a series of independent thoughts. We will read the whole chapter but it will not be so much about context, but just to enjoy the entire chapter).
Proverbs 18:1-24 (NIV)
1 An unfriendly man pursues selfish ends; he defies all sound judgment.
2 A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions.
3 When wickedness comes, so does contempt, and with shame comes disgrace.
4 The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters, but the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.
5 It is not good to be partial to the wicked or to deprive the innocent of justice.
6 A fool’s lips bring him strife, and his mouth invites a beating.
7 A fool’s mouth is his undoing, and his lips are a snare to his soul.
8 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man’s inmost parts.
9 One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys.
10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.
11 The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it an unscalable wall.
12 Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud, but humility comes before honor.
13 He who answers before listening– that is his folly and his shame.
14 A man’s spirit sustains him in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear?
15 The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out.
16 A gift opens the way for the giver and ushers him into the presence of the great.
17 The first to present his case seems right, till another comes forward and questions him.
18 Casting the lot settles disputes and keeps strong opponents apart.
19 An offended brother is more unyielding than a fortified city, and disputes are like the barred gates of a citadel.
20 From the fruit of his mouth a man’s stomach is filled; with the harvest from his lips he is satisfied.
21 The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
22 He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the LORD.
23 A poor man pleads for mercy, but a rich man answers harshly.
24 A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Today’s Quiet Time with God
I hope you enjoyed reading Proverbs Chapter 18. I always enjoy reading the proverbs. For years I have spent time reading a chapter of Proverbs a day for a month. Since there are 31 chapters of Proverbs you can read one chapter a day and they fit perfectly in to most months. Next month you may want to try adding this as part of your regular habit of Bible reading. Read your daily online Bible study from God’s Daytimer, and then read the chapter of Proverbs that corresponds with the day of the month. Today’s verse is about the importance of having one or two real friends. All of us need someone in our lives that we can be completely open with. People that we don’t need to pretend or preform for. Some people settle for a lot of superficial relationships, but the Bible says it is better to focus your efforts in a few deep relationships, with people who will stick with you no matter what. As you think about your relationships today, remember the most important relationship of all, the one that you have with Jesus, you will be blessed as you do!
