Mark 8:35

Welcome to Online Bible Studies

Today’s Bible verse is
Mark 8:35 (NIV)
35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it.

Let’s read the verse in context:
Mark 8:31-38 (NIV)
31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.” 34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? 37 Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

Today’s Quiet Time with God

The Christian walk is fascinating. I was thinking about today’s verse and I was trying to figure out how to explain it to someone who didn’t know Jesus. Apart from knowing Him, the verse makes no sense at all. It is only after we begin our relationship with Him, that these upside down statements begin to make sense. Real life will never be found in living life the way our culture and society promote. Life is found in Christ, and joy is found in living for Him. God has hard wired the world so that the more like Him we become (giving, generous, compassionate, etc.) the more life and joy we experience. Follow hard after Jesus today, you will be blessed as you do!

Psalm 31:14-15

Welcome to Online Bible Studies

Today’s Bible verse is
Psalms 31:14-15 (NIV)
14 But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, “You are my God.” 15 My times are in your hands; deliver me from my enemies and from those who pursue me.

Let’s read the verse in context:
Psalms 31:9-16 (NIV)
9 Be merciful to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and my body with grief. 10 My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak. 11 Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbors; I am a dread to my friends– those who see me on the street flee from me. 12 I am forgotten by them as though I were dead; I have become like broken pottery. 13 For I hear the slander of many; there is terror on every side; they conspire against me and plot to take my life. 14 But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, “You are my God.” 15 My times are in your hands; deliver me from my enemies and from those who pursue me. 16 Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love.

Today’s Quiet Time with God

When I read the first part of today’s context reading (verses 9-13), I always think that David was having a really bad day. I love the way his focus changes when He gets to verse 14. “I trust in you, O LORD; I say, “You are my God….My times are in your hands;”. Our times are in His hands. When I begin to get unsettled about anything, this is one of the verses I think I about. My times are in His hands. In that simple truth I am reminded that He is in control. Life seems to go along a lot better when I remember that He is control and that He is my Shepherd. It is only then that I really am able to rest and be at peace. When life starts to get a little crazy this week, just take a moment and remember that your times are in His hands. You will be blessed as you do!

Psalms 27:1 (MSG)

Welcome to Online Bible Studies

Today’s Bible verse is
Psalms 27:1 (MSG)
1 A David psalm Light, space, zest— that’s God! So, with him on my side I’m fearless, afraid of no one and nothing.

Let’s read the verse in context:
Psalms 27:1-14 (MSG)
1 A David psalm Light, space, zest— that’s God! So, with him on my side I’m fearless, afraid of no one and nothing. 2 When vandal hordes ride down ready to eat me alive, Those bullies and toughs fall flat on their faces. 3 When besieged, I’m calm as a baby. When all hell breaks loose, I’m collected and cool. 4 I’m asking God for one thing, only one thing: To live with him in his house my whole life long. I’ll contemplate his beauty; I’ll study at his feet. 5 That’s the only quiet, secure place in a noisy world, The perfect getaway, far from the buzz of traffic. 6 God holds me head and shoulders above all who try to pull me down. I’m headed for his place to offer anthems that will raise the roof! Already I’m singing God-songs; I’m making music to God. 7 Listen, God, I’m calling at the top of my lungs: “Be good to me! Answer me!” 8 When my heart whispered, “Seek God,” my whole being replied, “I’m seeking him!” 9 Don’t hide from me now! You’ve always been right there for me; don’t turn your back on me now. Don’t throw me out, don’t abandon me; you’ve always kept the door open. 10 My father and mother walked out and left me, but God took me in.
11 Point me down your highway, God; direct me along a well-lighted street; show my enemies whose side you’re on. 12 Don’t throw me to the dogs, those liars who are out to get me, filling the air with their threats.
13 I’m sure now I’ll see God’s goodness in the exuberant earth. 14 Stay with God! Take heart. Don’t quit. I’ll say it again: Stay with God.

Today’s Quiet Time with God

This is a great Psalm filled with some great promises. To me, it is an awesome reminder of the love that God has for us. Even if it sometimes seems like everyone and everything is against us, God is always for us. All of us face problems in life. The real problem is never the problem, it’s how we deal with the problem. We can let the problems overwhelm us and become the focus of our lives, or we can continue to let God be the focus and know that He can use problems. I want to encourage you today, no matter what you are going through, keep your eyes on Jesus. You will be blessed as you do!
