Matthew 9:13 (MSG)

Today’s Bible verse is
Matthew 9:13 (MSG)
13 Go figure out what this Scripture means: ‘I’m after mercy, not religion.’ I’m here to invite outsiders, not coddle insiders.”

Let’s read the verse in context:
Matthew 9:1-13 (MSG)
1 Back in the boat, Jesus and the disciples recrossed the sea to Jesus’ hometown. 2 They were hardly out of the boat when some men carried a paraplegic on a stretcher and set him down in front of them. Jesus, impressed by their bold belief, said to the paraplegic, “Cheer up, son. I forgive your sins.” 3 Some religion scholars whispered, “Why, that’s blasphemy!” 4 Jesus knew what they were thinking, and said, “Why this gossipy whispering? 5 Which do you think is simpler: to say, ‘I forgive your sins,’ or, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 Well, just so it’s clear that I’m the Son of Man and authorized to do either, or both… .” At this he turned to the paraplegic and said, “Get up. Take your bed and go home.” 7 And the man did it. 8 The crowd was awestruck, amazed and pleased that God had authorized Jesus to work among them this way. 9 Passing along, Jesus saw a man at his work collecting taxes. His name was Matthew. Jesus said, “Come along with me.” Matthew stood up and followed him. 10 Later when Jesus was eating supper at Matthew’s house with his close followers, a lot of disreputable characters came and joined them. 11 When the Pharisees saw him keeping this kind of company, they had a fit, and lit into Jesus’ followers. “What kind of example is this from your Teacher, acting cozy with crooks and riff-raff?” 12 Jesus, overhearing, shot back, “Who needs a doctor: the healthy or the sick? 13 Go figure out what this Scripture means: ‘I’m after mercy, not religion.’ I’m here to invite outsiders, not coddle insiders.”

Today’s Quiet Time with God

I think this verse is really good in the paraphrase. What does this scripture mean to you, “I’m after mercy not religion”? I think it means that it is more important to ask God to help you clean up your insides than it is to try and look like you have it all together on the outside. Take some time to think about this verse today, you will be blessed as you do!

Deuteronomy 6:4-5

Today’s Bible verse is
Deuteronomy 6:4-5 (NIV)
4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

Let’s read the verse in context:
Deuteronomy 6:1-12 (NIV)
1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. 3 Hear, O Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you. 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. 10 When the LORD your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you–a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, 11 houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant–then when you eat and are satisfied, 12 be careful that you do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

Today’s Quiet Time with God

Deuteronomy 6:4 is called the “Shema” which means “hear” in Hebrew. This verse is the confession of faith in Judaism. The verse means that The Lord (Yahweh) is totally unique and that He alone is God. Deuteronomy 6:5 then tells us that we are to love God with all of our heart, soul, and strength. We are to choose to be involved in an intimate loving relationship with God. It is always amazing to me that the God who created the universe, wants and enjoys relationship with me. And of course, He wants and enjoys relationship with you as well. Be blessed as you walk each day with Him.

I have an idea that I want to run by all of you who are so faithful in reading God’s Daytimer. I am planning on starting a “Church Online“. This church online will not simply be an extension of the church I currently Pastor, it will be a “new thing”. I envision it as more than just a place to come and watch or listen to sermons and Bible studies. I see it as people from all over the world connecting to encourage and pray for each other, as well as a vehicle for providing all types of ministry opportunities for everyone involved, in order to reach out to people every where with the Good News. I hope over time to have thousands of believers and non-believers from all over the world coming to see what is happening at the Church Online.

Before I jump headlong into the the project, I am asking for 100 people that will join up to pray for and be a part of the initial core group of believers what will serve as the foundation for the Church Online. I am hoping that many of you will be a part of this initial group. If this is something that you can do, just go to the new Church Online website. It is still very plain and simple with no bells and whistles. I don’t want to add all that stuff until we have the first 100 people involved. Once you are at the new site, you will see a place to “join” by subscribing to the free RSS or email feed. The counter of how many people have signed up is displayed as well. So far it is just me. Once we reach 100, we will start moving on really getting the Church Online started. Mark 1:40-41

Welcome to Online Bible Studies

Today’s Bible verse is
Mark 1:40-41 (NIV)
40 A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” 41 Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”

Let’s read the verse in context:
Mark 1:29-45 (NIV)
29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. 32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. 35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” 38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else–to the nearby villages–so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. 40 A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” 41 Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured. 43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: 44 “See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.” 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.

Today’s Quiet Time with God

Today’s verse is a great example of how much Jesus care about us. The back story in the verse is important. Leprosy (the word leprosy in the Bible is used to cover all type of skin diseases) was particularly distressing to Jews because it made them ceremonially unclean and they became isolated and cut off from their community. When the leper comes to Jesus and asks “if you are willing” it is not a question about Jesus power, but His willingness to touch the life of an “outcast”. Jesus compassionate response was not only to heal but to “touch” this man who probable hadn’t know the touch of another person for a long time. All of us are “ceremonially unclean” because of our sin, and yet Jesus has compassion for us, clearly demonstrated at the cross. No one has loved us like Jesus loves us! Be blessed.
