Colossians 3:1-2

Today’s Bible verse is
Colossians 3:1-2 (NIV)
1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

Let’s read the verse in context:

1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. 12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Today’s Quiet Time with God

Today’s verse helps us to remember what is really important. We need to set our hearts and minds on “things above”, not on “earthly things”. Unfortunately, because we live surrounded by “earthly things” it is easy for them to become our focus. Make it your goal today to keep your focus on Jesus. Let His peace rule in your hearts and let His word dwell in you richly. You will be blessed as you do!

Philippians 4:4-7

4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Today’s Quiet Time with God

I wonder if any of you remember the song, “He’s got the whole world in His hands”. Some of you probably just started singing it in your heads. I was reminded of the song as I was reading our verse today. The Lord is near. No matter what we are going through on any given day, even when we are faced with situations we would rather avoid, we can rest in the “peace” of God which transcends understanding. He is right here with us and we can talk to Him about our situation. Rather than get anxious and worried we can pray, and our hearts and minds find rest. I am glad that He has me in His hands. He’s got you, too! Be blessed.

1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.

Let’s read the verse in context:
John 14:1-14 (NIV)
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. 12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Today’s Quiet Time with God

Today’s verse is all about comfort. Jesus was preparing His disciples for the difficulties that they would be facing. I think it is a great verse for all of us who are currently in the path of hurricane Ike. I have been talking about the “Cone of Uncertainty” for the last couple of days. Unfortunately, at the moment, the middle of that cone is directly over the top of where we live and minister. Check it out:

That big red 4 on September 9th is currently directly over our church. Of course, a lot of things could happen between now and then. The storm could take a different track, the storm could weaken, the storm could strengthen. The storm could come and do a lot of damage. The storm could come and do very little damage. From a completely natural point of view, this whole process can be totally unsettling. But, no matter what happens, God is still God. Things may be forever different on Wednesday, but this is all part of living the adventure that is the “Christian Life”. We can always trust Him, for He will always be faithful!

We have been told today that we need to evacuate Sunday morning. Unfortunately, that means we have to cancel our services for Sunday. We are going to meet Saturday night at 7PM however. If you are in the Keys we encourage you to join us for worship and prayer. If you are not in the Keys, we would ask that you would pray, not only for us, but for everyone in the path of this storm.

Remember, don’t let your hearts be troubled, trust in God, you will be blessed as you do!
