Colossians 1:9-12

Welcome to Online Bible Studies

Today’s Bible verse is
Colossians 1:9-12 (NIV)
9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.

Let’s read the verse in context:
Colossians 1:9-23 (NIV)
9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. 21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation– 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

Today’s Quiet Time with God

Sometimes when we are praying for people, we aren’t sure what to pray. It is easy for us to fall back on the standard “God bless them” prayers. When I read prayers like today’s verses, I am inspired to take it to another level. What a great example of a specific prayer. In this prayer Paul prays:

  • To be filled with knowledge of His will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.
  • To live a life worthy of the Lord and to please Him in every way.
  • To bear fruit in every good work.
  • To grow in the knowledge of God.
  • To be strengthened with all power to have great endurance and patience.

That is a specific prayer. I would suggest using this as a model of prayer as you pray for the people that God puts on your heart today. You will be blessed as you do!

Philippians 4:4-7

4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

And the God of peace will be with you. 10 I rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you have renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you have been concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

Today’s Quiet Time with God

I wonder if any of you remember the song, “He’s got the whole world in His hands”. Some of you probably just started singing it in your heads. I was reminded of the song as I was reading our verse today. The Lord is near. No matter what we are going through on any given day, even when we are faced with situations we would rather avoid, we can rest in the “peace” of God which transcends understanding. He is right here with us and we can talk to Him about our situation. Rather than get anxious and worried we can pray, and our hearts and minds find rest. I am glad that He has me in His hands. He’s got you, too! Be blessed.

Proverbs 3:3-4

Welcome to Online Bible Studies

Today’s Bible verse is
Proverbs 3:3-4 (NIV)
3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.

Let’s read the verse in context:
Proverbs 3:1-10 (NIV)
1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, 2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. 3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. 9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

Today’s Quiet Time with God

We are encouraged to always hold on to love and faithfulness. Love and faithfulness will allows us to win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. I like the idea of having favor with God, I also like the idea of having favor with man. The next few verses in the context reading give us a clue of how to hold on to love and faithfulness. We need to live our lives “trusting in the Lord and leaning not on our own understanding”, we need to “fear the Lord and shun evil”, and we need to “honor the Lord with our wealth”. As we live for God, He will “make our paths straight”, “bring health to our body and nourishment to our bones”, and “fill our barns and our vats to overflowing”. Live for God today, hold on to love and faithfulness, you will be blessed as you do!
